San Antonio, Austin, and the Texas Hill Country ~ May 16 - 20, 2012

Planned itinerary* includes:

PRE-MEETING DAY TRIP to two Texas-German towns in the Hill Country, Fredericksburg and Comfort, founded by immigrants who transplanted their beliefs, lifestyles, and architectural forms.

 SAN ANTONIO

  • Reception at the exclusive Dashiell House, reached by a barge cruise on the tree-lined San Antonio River.
  • Special tour of selected sites in the King William Historic District, San Antonio’s most fashionable residential area in the late 19th century, including the Steves Homestead, Villa Finale, with its unrivaled interiors and collections, and a magnificent private home, opened just for us.
  • Luncheon at the Guenther House, with its own museum of historic photographs and memorabilia, and a visit to the Albert Steves House.
  • Later 19th Century residential areas with visits to Lambermont, also called the Terrell Castle, the Romanesque Revival Maverick-Carter House, and a driving tour through the Monte Vista Historic District.
  • Walking tour with a focus on the Hispanic heritage of Texas and San Antonio, including the Alamo, the Paseo Del Rio, La Villita, and lunch at El Mercado, the Mexican market.
  • Walking tour including the 1858 Menger Hotel, San Fernando Cathedral, and Spanish Governor’s Palace.

AUSTIN 

  • Curator-led tour of the Texas State Capitol, the 1856 Greek Revival Governor’s Mansion, and the Bremond Block, with its grand 19th century mansions. 
  • A seated luncheon and our annual business meeting at stately Bellevue Place, now the Austin Women’s Club. 
  • Tour of Austin’s 1840 French Legation and the Elisabet Ney Museum, filled with 19th century sculpture.
  • A special reception hosted by a VSA Summer School alumna at the Neil Cochran House (1855). 

POST-MEETING DAY TRIP including the McNay Art Museum, housed in a Spanish-Revival mansion, as well as a sojourn in Gruene, Texas, with its “oldest continuously-run dance hall in the United States,” lunch at the Grist Mill Restaurant, and antique shops.

HEADQUARTERS HOTEL will be the Hyatt Regency San Antonio, overlooking the Alamo and directly on the Riverwalk, with its multitude of restaurants and shopping and strolling possibilities.
