Barcelona and Modernity: Gaudí to Dalí
Monday, May 14, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Alumni are invited to a private tour of Barcelona & Modernity: Gaudi to Dali at the Metropolitan Museum of Art led by the exhibition curator Jared Goss, followed by drinks at Pauline Metcalf’s apartment.

It is the first comprehensive survey of its type ever mounted in America, this exhibition explores the diverse and innovative work of Barcelona's artists, architects, and designers in the years between the Barcelona Universal Exposition of 1888 and the imposition of the Fascist regime of Francisco Franco in 1939. The exhibition features some 300 works, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, posters, decorative objects, furniture, architectural models, and designs. Barcelona and Modernity offers new insights into the art movements that advanced the city's quest for modernity and confirmed it as the primary center of radical intellectual, political, and cultural activities in Spain.
Accompanied by a catalogue.

Meet at Metropolitan Museum Entrance Hall at 4:15 PM. If you are not a member of the Metropolitan Museum, please pay your admission fee prior to meeting the group at 4:15 PM.

Pauline Metcalf’s address is: 19 East 88th St., Apt. 11D
The cost is $25.00, in addition to the Museum entrance fee.

Another benefit of your Alumni Association of the Victorian Society Summer Schools membership … a private viewing of Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art!

Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall—An Artist’s Country Estate
November 21, 2006–May 20, 2007
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Exhibition Hall, 2nd floor

Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen (Nonnie), curator of Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has graciously agreed to lead a private tour of the exhibition for Alumni on Friday, February 23 at 2:30 PM. The fee for the tour is $24 per person and includes the admission fee for those who are not members of the Museum.  If you have not paid your 2007 Alumni dues, you need to have done so to be eligible to attend the tour.

Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany's extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, New York, completed in 1905, was the epitome of the designer's achievement and in many ways defined this multifaceted artist. Tiffany designed every aspect of the project inside and out, creating a total aesthetic environment. The exhibition is a window into Tiffany’s most personal art, bringing into focus this remarkable artist who lavished as much care and creativity on the design and furnishing of his home and gardens as he did on all the wide-ranging media in which he worked. Although the house tragically burned to the ground in 1957, the exhibition brings together many of its surviving architectural elements and interior features. In addition, the exhibition features Tiffany's personal collections of his own work—breathtaking stained-glass windows, paintings, glass and ceramic vases—as well as the artist's collections of Japanese, Chinese, and Native American works of art.  Accompanied by a publication.

Please send your $24 per-person check made payable to the Alumni Association to Nancy Golden, President, Alumni Association of the Victorian Society Summer Schools, 2207 Alameda Padre Serra, Santa Barbara CA 93103-1707.  If you have not paid your 2007 Alumni dues, please include your check for this as well: $45 Individual, $75 Household, $100, $250, $500.

Assemble at the Group Registration Desk in the Great Hall no later than 2:30 PM.
