Greater Chicago

The Greater Chicago Chapter of the Victorian Society in America schedules six activities a year, five in the immediate area and one further away but close enough to be a day trip.

In 2016 the Greater Chicago chapter activities included co-sponsoring lectures on 'Fashion Faux Pas of the Gilded Age' and 'Preserving Our Victorian Architectural Past'. We attended the play The Gilded Age, an adaptation of the novel by Mark Twain. Still to come is viewing "Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times", an exhibit of Downton Abbey costumes with an accompanying display of clothing styles worn by the Chicago aristocracy, all presented at the Dreihaus Museum in the palatial Nickerson Mansion; and a walking tour of Professors Row, a Chicago Landmark District, a block of semi-attached row houses by architect Joseph Brompton built in 1903. We will view private collections of vintage cameras and turn-of-the century cast iron banks in one of the row houses. We plan a day trip to Oregon, Il. to tour the 1891 Romanesque Revival Ogle County Courthouse (George Garnsey, architect) and the Classical Revival/Arts and Crafts Oregon Pulblic Library (Pond & Pond, architects), and the campus of Lorado Taft's 1898 Eagle Nest Art Colony. We will close the year with a lecture about 'American 19th Century Views of Shakespeare' to be presented at the Glessner House Museum.
