Labor Day 2005

The observance of Labor Day began over 100 years ago. Conceived by America's labor unions as a testament to their cause, the legislation sanctioning the holiday was shepherded through Congress amid labor unrest and signed by President Grover Cleveland as a reluctant election-year compromise.

A key event in the history of the labor movement was the Haymarket Riot.  On the evening of May 4, 1886, several thousand people assembled in the Haymarket area of Chicago to protest the killing of two workers the previous day by the police.   As the meeting was nearing a close, about 180 police marched from the nearby Desplaines Street station to the makeshift speakers' stand. As the police commander ordered the rally to disperse, a dynamite bomb was thrown into the ranks of the officers. One officer was killed almost instantly, and six more would die in the next few weeks.  Acting with overwhelming public support, the police arrested dozens of political radicals.  However, they were tried by a prejudiced judge and jury, four being were sentenced to be hanged.  Scholars have long considered the Haymarket trial to be one of the most notorious miscarriages of justice in American history.  For the full story see the links below:

Backyards and gardens?

VSA member, Charles Lockwood, author of Bricks and Brownstone, an impressive book about the architecture and history of New York's brownstones, says that his book has sparked interest among readers about the history of townhouse yards and gardens - a subject at first thought to be obscure.  Now further work is required.

Is there any VSA member with a knowledge of the subject who can suggest research sources?  If so, please contact Charles at:

San Francisco's Golden Gate Park: A Thousand and Seventeen Acres of Stories (Paperback)

One of the world's most lovely urban oases, San Francisco's Golden Gate Park surely is one of the most beloved. This 1,000-acre green space in the middle of the cosmopolitan City by the Bay is covered with grassy meadows, wooded bike trails, secluded lakes, open groves, formal gardens, and several museums.

This gorgeous book captures the wonders of this special place in an elegant package that is perfect for visitors and residents alike. Filled with color photographs that spill over with the flowers, trees, and charming architecture you expect, SAN FRANCISCO'S GOLDEN GATE PARK also includes many black-and-white historical photos documenting the park's illustrious and colorful past. A full-color map of areas and structures within the park gives a helpful overview, and lively, anecdotal text provides information about particular monuments, structures, gardens, and museums, from the Dutch Windmill, historic Beach Chalet, Japanese Tea Garden, and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, to the herd of bison grazing peacefully in an enclosed paddock just off Kennedy Drive.

About the Author

A Question of Millais..

The Delaware Art Museum is organizing an exhibition entitled 'Anatomy of a Painting: John Everett Millais' The White Cockade' under the direction of Dr. Margaretta Frederick, curator of the Bancroft Pre-Raphaelite collection. Several versions of the subject (also know as 'The Fair Jacobite') are unlocated: a small oil on panel dated 1862, a Thomas Annan photograph of the painting dated 1862, a small watercolor dated 1863 and a George Zobel mezzotint published 1878.

Can any readers offer information or the whereabouts of these works?

Take a look at the VICTORIA logo above.  At first, a stylish but simple rendering of the name.  But a closer look will reveal the art: the word is the same upside down.

This image is a type of ambigram.  Readers of popular fiction may recognize the technique from the best-selling novel Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. The artist for that book, John Langdon, was kind enough to send us this ambigram.

WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

THE MUSEUM OF ONLINE MUSEUMS
http://www.coudal.com/moom.php

At the Museum of Online Museums you will find links to online collections and exhibits covering a vast array of interests and obsessions:  from a review of classic art and architecture, to the study of mundane (and sometimes bizarre) objects elevated to art by their number, juxtaposition, or passion of the collector. The MoOM is organized into three sections.

The Museum Campus contains links to brick-and-mortar museums with an interesting online presence. Most of these sites will have multiple exhibits from their collections (or, in the case of the Smithsonian, displays of items not on display in the Washington museum itself).

The Permanent Collection displays links to exhibits of particular interest to design and advertising.

Galleries, Exhibition, and Shows is an eclectic and ever-changing list of interesting links to collections and galleries, most of them hosted on personal web pages. In other words, it's where all the good stuff is.
